THANKSGIVING IS MY favorite
holiday because all of America can
participate together. Our family
dinner numbers at least thirty
guests, and we alternate between
my two daughters’ homes. Each
family brings something: The
hostess provides the turkey with
the trimmings; the rest of us
bring the appetizers, salad, and
vegetables, plus pics and other
desserts. During dessert everyone
is asked what they arc grateful
for. The football game follows, and
we all mellow out. Thanksgiving
never fails to be a great time in
our family.

TO HELP LIVEN THINGS UP and
make the holidays extra special,
my family has switched roles.
Instead of grandmothers and
moms slaving away in the kitchen
all day, the grandkids have taken
over. It really makes the day a
holiday for our moms, who get the
day off to just enjoy. Changing the
way we do things has created new
traditions for our family.

IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN totally about
family. While growing up in the
Deep South, my family sometimes
traveled across town for Thanks-
giving and sometimes hundreds
of miles. As the family grew, the
holiday also served as a family
reunion. Because my family is
diverse in ethnic background,
we have merged recipes for all
tastes. We like to deep-fry our
turkeys and smoke the hams.
There is always a pot of seafood
gumbo. As we sit together in the
evening and drink coffee with a
piece of fudge or divinity, we
share the news of our good
fortune or garner advice for the
problems we are enduring.

WE CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING
at my home. Our crowd is getting
smaller each year, and it makes
me sad. But we are thankful to
have each other. Dinner will
be traditional, just like Mom
always did it.

FOR OUR THANKSGIVING we
meet at my sister’s house. There
are seven of us kids, and we’re
all married and have children.
We all bring a dish so my Mom
doesn’t have to cook or do any of
the cleanup. We give thanks for
all of us being able to get together
and have a good time, and loving
each other.
